Shout Your Hope

In Response to Shout Your Abortion

# Shout Your Hope

A few weeks ago I was heartbroken and startled to read an article, on ScaryMommy, that speaks of the reasons one mama chose abortion.  Her reasons were focused on her difficult decision to choose abortion because her baby had a condition which might mean she would have a challenging life.  The little baby girl might have had to undergo multiple heart surgeries and might have developmental delays, it might have been a life long struggle.

The mom, who is also an OBGYN, chose abortion and then chose to write about it, with warnings to others why late term abortion bans should be put to rest.  She wrote, “Every time I leaned toward termination, I felt I was being selfish. That I was choosing our lives – mine, my husband’s, my son’s – over hers. Every time I thought about continuing the pregnancy, I felt I was being selfish. That I couldn’t go through with termination because I couldn’t cope with the guilt. That she would suffer because I was afraid of my own emotional pain.”  I ached for this mom.  I ached for her tiny little unborn daughter.  The weight this mom must have felt, the burden she carried.  I wanted to reach across the screen and hug her.  I wanted to tell her you will never be selfish for choosing life.  Those decisions shouldn’t be ours to make.  We are our children’s mother.  We are chosen to give life.  We are chosen to love the children we are given.

I was grieving by the end of the blogpost, the loss of her child, the child she would never know.  I was saddened when I saw that with her blog post she chose to underscore how she almost wasn’t able to get that abortion because of her late term status.  If she had found out about her daughter’s condition a day later – if she had waited a moment too long, because of the law, she would not be able to get that abortion.  She states that many tests don’t come back in time and it is our prerogative as women to be able to make these decisions in our own timing.  She chose to encourage other mothers to also find their voice and not feel shame in their choices to end their children’s life.

I wanted to write about this.  I really wanted to but something held me back.  The feelings I felt were those of sorrow for her loss and anger at the idea that she felt that she had no other choice.   I have had many friends lose babies in the last few years.  It was not their choice, the choice of life was taken from them.  This is not something easy for me to think about or to write about.  Emotions mingling, I just couldn’t hit publish.  I am a mother of a child with multiple physical and developmental disabilities and I know the pain and the heartbreak that comes with having a child with a disability.  My thoughts, my choices, my lifestyle just don’t line up with the writer’s.  It saddens me that she felt it would be somehow seen as selfish to keep her child.  This world seems to turn everything upside down.  Although sometimes you really have to look for them, I see examples all around us of men and women who choose life over death.  Who choose love over fears.  Who show selflessness in the face of those who do not.  Take a look at three stories I found…

1.) Not too long ago, I read the story of Ian and Larissa, a couple who fell in love prior to Ian’s car accident and subsequent brain injury.  “Larissa faced a choice: to let go of the man she loved, or to walk with him down a road of certain suffering. She chose the road of suffering. And she chose the road of love.”  Read more here.

2.) Or this father’s journey with his daughter who has Down Syndrome: “And yet, the older Jillian gets, the narrower her world becomes. I see it when the birthday invitations stop coming, the play-dates disappear, the phone no longer rings. She spends a lot of time in her room, listening to music. I wonder how she does at school. I wonder if the kids will stop being gracious. I wonder how often my kid has to eat lunch by herself. I’m buoyed by her spirit but I wonder how much she doesn’t say. He wrote a book about being a dad to his daughter, “An Uncomplicated Life: A Father’s Memoir of His Exceptional Daughter.”  Read more here.

3.) Or this woman who chose life even in the midst of a hard situation.  She was so close to choosing abortion, she tells the beautiful story of giving birth to her daughter, instead. Read more here.

In my case, I know the bad days and the good.  I know the change that has been brought in my life as a result of having a child with disability.  It’s not always easy but it is edifying.  And so I live a humble life of ups and downs of hopes and fears.  Through all of this, each week we have good days and bad, but in the end I believe I have learned more from my son than he from me.
Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, Isaiah 5-20 (1)

And then today.  Today, I open up Facebook and I see the trending news.  I see the hashtag that has been circulating.  It reads #shoutyourabortion.  The hashtag is added to dozens, hundreds of tweets and status updates about why their abortion was good.

These women are tweeting the reasons and the fact that they are proud they had an abortion.  I freeze.  I can’t fathom the madness that has overtaken our nation.  I felt it weeks ago when I read the other blog post.  I felt the rise of the wave.  The culture clash.  The time was near.  And then today.  The rejoicing.  The celebrations.  The seemingly endless tweets of one woman who writes she is happy she had an abortion.  If it makes you happy, it can’t be bad, right?

I see others who tweet the years of their abortions one in 2010 another in 2007 … and my mind immediately recognizes those as the years of my third and fourth babies’ birthdates.  I feel sadness wash over me.  Then I think of these women’s losses.  I’m sad that somehow they have become so deceived that they don’t even recognize what they’ve lost.

Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, Isaiah 5-20 (2)

I’m sad that in our culture, we will sacrifice our children in order to obtain the elusive all-mighty happiness.  We will die chasing that rabbit down the hole.  I’m saddened that this is the state of our country, as it seems we are a rapidly evolving people.  I’m scared of what we are evolving into.  Where does this lead?  Where does this end?  There was a time when abortion was looked at as something that should be “safe, legal, and rare” as Hiliary Clinton has said. Source

This is not the position of many anymore.
In this darkened state of our nation, I want to reach out and encourage you to share your trials, your hardships and your testimonies.  Spread truth.  Spread love.  Spread Hope. Or maybe you should hashtag it: #ShoutYourHope and start a revolution.

Bats, Caves, and October Read Alouds {with Linkup}

Last week I wrote about how two years ago my kids and I did an Apple & Fall Unit Study for the month of September.  We included fun apple and leaf activities to our school work.  Well, this week I want to let you know some of my favorite books for October.  In the Fall of 2013 we did several unit studies, first was apples and the second one was bats & caves.

Bats, Caves & October Read Alouds

(Contains Affiliate Links)

The books I’ve listed below are some beautiful picture book read alouds that are fun to read as October comes around.  We tied a study on bats to the study of caves. Finally, we added in other animals that live in caves which ties into Winter and hibernation.  I hope you have fun reading these to your little ones.  It can easily be turned into a more “formal” unit study with some art, science and geography added in.  These books are appropriate for grades K-3.  Check out my book list, below:

Stellaluna

Bats

Zipping, Zapping, Zooming Bats

Cave Animals

Caves

One Small Square: Caves

Animals in the Winter

Hibernation

Now, it’s time to link up!  What have you been reading?  Do you have a homeschooling or read-aloud post you would like to share?  I will be adding your posts to my Pinterest Board for read alouds:

8 Homeschooling Myths

Not too long ago, I was a public school mom considering homeschooling.  The reasons to homeschool were many and the reasons to continue down the path upon which we started were few.  Even so, the myths that populate our society waited, ready to pounce.  Have you heard them too?  Have you fallen victim to them?  Have you fought them?

(This post contains affiliate links.)

8 Homeschooling Myths I’ve Believed

Myth #1 Your Children Will Be “Unsocialized”

I looked up socialized in the dictionary and here is the first definition:  “to make social; make fit for life in companionship with others.”  So, somehow children who are taught at home are somehow not “fit for life in companionship with others”?  That’s an odd one.  I’d like to ask how where my child learns determines whether they are able to be a companion to others.  In my family we have 6 children.  Those 6 children are best friends with each other.  Sure, they fight sometimes and then they make up.  They also play video games, make crafts, have dance parties, have movie nights, have talent shows, play tag, take turns on the playground, play board games and ride bikes together.  Simply put, they are family and they are friends.  My kids also get plenty of chances at “socialization” at church, at friend’s houses, on field trips and at co-op.  If I’m not careful, they might get “too much” socialization – but that is a subject for another post.

If by socialization we are talking about friendships, there are plenty of opportunities for friends outside of a school environment.  These include neighborhood playdates, parks and playground time, church, art and music lessons, co-ops, and sports.  However, there is another definition for unsocialized: “not sufficiently socialized to adjust to societal norms.”  If we are talking about children who can follow the rules at home and outside the home, I believe that has more to do with how we parent than where they go to school.

Myth #2  They Won’t Be Able to Play Sports & Other Extras

This one is very easy to disprove.  There are countless community programs to choose from.  From the local parks department to the YMCA and even some churches provide many different types of sports.  Many states also allow homeschooled kids to participate in their local public school sports teams. My children both attend Tennis Lessons in Dallas and thoroughly enjoy them! As far as arts & music, my ten year old takes private piano lessons, my daughter has sung in a church children’s choir & Christmas musical, and they both take art classes.  There are also opportunities locally to take drama classes, do dance lessons, physical education class, and participate in plays.  There are even homeschool only groups that create choirs and other activities for homeschooled children to participate in together.

Myth #3 Your Children Will Lack Confidence From Lack of Competition

Sibling rivalry anyone?  My kids get plenty of friendly and some not so friendly competition.  What they don’t get at home, they get from the kids on the playground, or at their co-op.  This also implies that because your child is not in the local school, they will never have a chance to be up in the spotlight, in front of their peers.  This doesn’t have to be true.  I stated earlier that my son takes private piano lessons.  Well, along with the lessons, he has a recital to perform twice a year.  My daughter has done ballet recitals, performed on stage in her choir, and if you participate in a co-op your children will be able to practice their public speaking skills and their stage fright there.  Last year in our co-op, my children and I did the group devotional one week where my children acted out one of the parables that Jesus told.  They get plenty of experience with this, and will get more as they grow up.

Myth #4 I CANNOT Teach High School Chemistry or Calculus

The good news is, in this day and age, you won’t have to!  There are so many options when it comes to homeschooling your high schooler!  These include group science classes which meet at churches and community centers, co-ops, online classes, and even taking classes at the local community college.  With the growing popularity of homeschooling, moms (and dads) have a much easier job.  We can hand over the reigns on the subjects that intimidate us, to others whom we trust.  In fact, that is how many high-school co-ops are run.  In our co-op the moms and dads who have a science background and degree teach the science classes and the others who have grammar and English background teach those… and then there are those of us who have an art background and we get to have fun with paint and pencils!  There is something for everyone!

Myth #5 Homeschooling Costs Too Much

It can be as cheap or as expensive as you want it to be.  There are FREE options in homeschooling, there are cheap options and there are very expensive options.  Many websites exist for buying and selling used curriculum and books.  In addition to this,  there are reusable curriculum choices that you can save to use for each child, and of course there is always your local library!  Plus, if you have friends who homeschool, you can take turns borrowing supplies.

Myth #6  Homeschool Moms Get No “Me Time”

There is a perception that moms must get NO time to themselves if they homeschool.  While, I admit, that I do get less “me time” than a stay at home mom whose kids all go to school, I can’t say that I don’t get any time to myself.  We still take a break in the late afternoon for quiet time.  I get some time to chat with other moms at our co-op, which I adore.  We also are free to have “playdates” and field trips with other parents and children.

Myth #7 If You Don’t Have A Teaching Degree, You Are Unqualified To Teach

This one is personally offensive to me.  I do not have a teaching degree, but I do have a college degree and I LOVE learning.  I was one of the nerdy kids at school, who actually enjoyed going to school and learning new things.  I hope to impart that love of learning on my own children.  I do not think it is the degree that makes you wise, I think it your love and aptitude for knowledge.  If you can read, you can teach your children.  If you are especially nervous about how to teach or what to teach, there are many curriculum choices available that will instruct you on what to say and what to ask your student.  Heart of Dakota gives many prompts to the teacher and gives specific questions to ask the students.  The bigger issue, I believe, is whether you have the passion and heart to homeschool your kids.  You must believe in yourself and not let the outside voices haunt you.

Myth #8 Only Super Moms Can Homeschool

So this one kind of sounds like a compliment, but it is still an excuse that many use for reasons they won’t or can’t homeschool.  You all know how I feel about that.  I have never met Supermom because she doesn’t exist.  There will be tough times and there might be doubts. Just understand that none of us are perfect and you will learn as you go. Keeping up with your kids test marks can be hard, I can’t even imagine how tough it is to mark a class of 30 kids tests! I love to use a test grader to take some pressure of me to do my marking, it’s super easy to do and saves me so much time. I’m sure this would be even more helpful for primary school teachers who have a lot more marking than I do!

Don’t allow these common myths to deter you.  If you feel led into homeschooling your children, I want to encourage you that you can do it.  You are equipped to teach your children.  It may sound cliché, but to have a happy homeschool all you really need is love.

A Busy Week: Our week in Unit 17 – Heart of Dakota

This week can be defined in one word: busy.  We were very busy as we began Unit 17 in Heart of Dakota Preparing Hearts for His Glory.  We began it on Monday and then started our new co-op on Tuesday.  I’m teaching two co-op classes this year: World Geography and Middle School Drawing.  I love my new classes.  The kids also were super excited about the new classes they had been waiting for all Summer.

Unit 17 of our curriculum was a fun week!  We learned about Julius Caesar and August Caesar.  We also participated in the science portion of the week and started reading a book about the constellations.  Technically, we were supposed to start this book in Unit 16 but I had ordered it late… so we started it in Unit 17 and played “catch up”.  Part of the project for this week was creating a book of stars.  The kids thoroughly enjoyed it, too.

We started reading a new book, “Fountain of Life” about the life of a teen boy who lived in the time of Jesus.  This historical fiction is an interesting story, weaving parts of the New Testament into a fictional story of a boy and his father who is a Pharisee.  I’m glad this book is included in the curriculum, it has given the kids a unique perspective on life as a young Jewish adult living in Ancient Rome.

11224789_10152969401062811_1379788887962035455_o

All of our reading about ancient history made our dog fall asleep.

My husband worked with the kids on this science kit that we had owned for a while and forgot to do.  The kids had so much fun doing the fun little experiments which were included in this kit.  They loved the study of color, prisms, light, and even the little “lightsaber” as my 4 year old called it.  They all had fun working on this project.  There were several days worth of projects included in the kit – which my family decided to knock out all in one afternoon.  They truly loved these projects.  Also, they were easy to do!  Bonus points!!!

I let the kids start watching a new educational documentary on ancient Rome.  It is called, Drive Thru History Rome if You Want To.  We all really liked this movie.  We haven’t watched all of it – just several of the “chapters”.  It is divided up into 3 sections.  Each of those are divided into small chapters.  We watched a few to drive home the points about the Roman Gods and the Pantheon.  We also watched the segment on Circus Maximus and chariot racing.  This movie is quite funny but very thorough in teaching details of ancient history.  I learned a lot from it, along with the kids.

And of course, we had plenty of book time with the littles.  Even the baby got involved!

We finished our week with “Fun Friday” which is a time when we make dessert together and then either play a board game or watch a family friendly movie together.  This week we played Baseball Monopoly and had ice-cream sundaes.  The game was actually somewhat educational as the kids learned how to better count money, while also working on addition and subtraction skills.  They also brushed up on their knowledge of MLB which was an added bonus.

A highlight of my week was getting caught up on laundry, including getting all of my cloth diapers washed, stuffed, folded and put away!  I intend for this to happen each time – but many times they end up in the laundry basket not folded.  I’m working on this!
