Looking for a Great Bible Curriculum? VeritasBible.com Review

VeritasBible.com Review

Old and New Testament Online Self-Paced Bible Veritas ReviewAre you looking for a way to incorporate Bible curriculum into your Summer Schooling? A couple of my kids have been studying the Bible with VeritasBible.com from Veritas Press!  We received a one-year family subscription to this website and so far have been using it with two of our kids.  What we have used so far, we have LOVED.  My goal is to also try it with my 5.5-year-old and our special needs 13 year old.

veritas bible
What is VeritasBible.com?
VeritasBible.com is new online Bible subscription from Veritas Press.  As of right now, there are three guides to choose from: Genesis to Joshua, Judges to Kings, or The Gospels.  Each of these includes 32 Bible lessons featuring Biblical Events and pertinent people, music to help learn the lesson, quizzes, activities, mapping and memory work.  This is a very in depth program which will help solidify Bible history in your child’s mind.

veritasbible

What did we use?
We used the Judges to Kings section.  I started off using this with only my 11-year-old son but my 9-year-old daughter quickly wanted to join in.  They both did the same lessons.  So far, they have learned the names of the Judges, the famous kings, and places as well.  It is extremely easy to log-in to this program, once logged-in the students are reminded to hit the white circle on the map which shows their progress.  They then begin the next lesson.  veritas pressThe lesson is comprised of a short intro with a host, who is a man dressed up like a person from the Old Testament days.  There is a short lesson with animated characters which narrates the Bible story in a kind of story-book format before it switches back to the host, who goes into a little more detail of the people and the events from this lesson.

Veritas Press
Sprinkled throughout the lesson are fun parts like games which alternate with quiz questions, mapping memory work, and other activities which jog the students memory and help them remember the material.  They may also include a song which helps with memorization and a short quiz that lets the student know how well they are doing remembering the facts.

Veritas Bible StudyWhat Did We Think?
We LOVE this program.  First of all, it really catches the kids attention.  I can’t choose my favorite part between the host who guides them through the material, to the fun games which act as mini-rewards, to the reinforcing quizzes and short but thorough lessons.  Veritas Press BibleMy kids have thoroughly enjoyed VeritasBible.com and actually may or may not have fought over who gets to answer which questions.  I finally told them they have to each do their own lesson (no more sharing!) because they both loved it so much.  I think all learning should be this fun.  I’m impressed with Veritas Press and will be using more of their Bible lessons in the future.

Untangling the Mystery {and a prayer request}

Untangling the Mystery

of

Our Son’s Developmental & Intellectual Disability

Those of you who know me well, know that I’ve lived with an unsolved mystery in my life for the past 11 years.

Thirteen years ago, I gave birth to a precious baby boy.  Everything on paper looked good.  Though he was born with panic-stricken staff at a local hospital by my side, his Apgar’s were great.  We left the hospital together and on-time.  He was cuddly and sweet and brought joy to our family just by his presence.

As his first year came and went we noticed while he met some milestones others didn’t progress on schedule.   We started to notice some motor delay, but nothing too severe… a little bit of low muscle tone and some trouble with learning to crawl and later to walk.  As his second year progressed we noticed more of the same, but he was still our happy little boy who loved cuddles and hugs, who was a fantastic eater, and was starting to say his first words.

At about 23 months we noticed a sudden change in his eating habits – he would gag on multiple types of food and had some trouble swallowing.  At first, it was one or two things and then it got worse and worse.  We also noticed a loss of his language skills.  We were finally sent to a neurologist who ran the usual tests but his findings were inconclusive.  At age 3 our once happy, calm, cuddly little boy had been replaced by someone we didn’t recognize.

As his problems grew, we sought help from medical professionals.  At just before 3 years old, we received his first diagnosis: cerebral palsy.  At 4, his second diagnosis, global delays.  At 5, the next: PDD-NOS (autism spectrum) and sensory processing disorder.  At 6: classic autism.  At 9: moderate cognitive delay/ intellectual disability with a much lower IQ than we originally had thought.  Throughout this time we ushered in a slew of therapists, speech for his lack of speech, occupational for fine motor delay, physical for gross motor delay and later ABA for behaviors.

Still lingering was a little question in the back of my mind.  How did this happen?  I realize that every day more and more children are being diagnosed with autism.  I realize that many mothers and fathers wonder the same question – even agonizing over it.  I analyzed everything and questioned his traumatic birth, me eating tuna fish twice in the first trimester, a flu shot I got in the third.  Did these things cause his autism, developmental issues, and intellectual disability? These are the questions that we ask ourselves that most people are unaware and that there are no answers for.  Did I cause this?  The grief that we mothers carry and feel down in our bones.

And then one day last week something changed.  I got a phone call from a specialist.  We had seen this geneticist at the prompting of another doctor who also had lingering doubts about the absurd number of diagnoses and slew of symptoms our son had.  Six months ago we did see this new doctor who felt strongly she was on to something in regards to our son’s condition but needed testing – extensive testing and some research to come to the right conclusion.  Her first inclination was correct.  Our son did inherit a chromosomal abnormality which has caused the behavioral change, the intellectual disability, the lack of language, and possibly even some things we aren’t fully aware of.  We still aren’t completely aware if there are variants of this problem and how it affects Adam differently from other children and adults who have been written about in research articles.

In the days following this news, my heart has broken for our firstborn.  As I read about how this condition progresses, I see our son and I relive the past.  What once was shrouded in mystery now is brought into the light.  Like a faceless phantom, we can now give a name to this disability which turned our world, and our child’s world upside down.

This news is bittersweet.  While we longed for knowledge and wisdom in how to best help Adam, knowing that I carry a gene that caused these problems in him is hard to hear.  Knowing that we were helpless to help him brings back a flood of feelings which open old wounds.   I still believe it is better to know than to not know, and so I am thankful for this news, and it is my prayer that our son’s struggles might, in turn, help another child and another family which happen to be dealing with this same condition.  Doctors and researchers are still finding more and more causes of intellectual disability and it’s surrounding conditions.  The genetic mutation that Adam has was written about in this article which talks about how this gene affects the brain and development.

We also ask for prayer for our unborn baby.  We now know that this genetic condition has a 50% chance of being passed down to boy babies.  In our case it would be impossible to give it to a girl baby, therefore we have a 25% chance overall.

Would you pray with us that the Lord’s will we be done in Adam’s life and in our unborn child’s life?  We pray that if there is a way for Adam to help others either through research or a further understanding of this condition that God will open these doors.  Our greatest hope is that no matter the outcome of these things, that God will be glorified through it all.  We appreciate your prayers.

Our 14 Week Update {pregnancy}

14 Week Update {Pregnancy}

So, we finally hit the 2nd trimester this week!  I’m now a little more than 14 weeks along and haven’t had any more check-ups since my last blog post announcing my pregnancy with baby # 7.  We are still in the every 4-week phase of appointments – so, it will be a couple of weeks still.  We do hope to get a sneak peek at the baby and maybe even find out what we are having in the next two weeks… I’ve been told it is easy to tell around 16 weeks and that is when we found out with our last baby.  We’ve been trying to guess if it is a boy or a girl and our house is split right down the middle!  All the boys think it is a boy and all the girls think it’s a girl!  So, we shall see who wins out. Right now we have 3 and 3 so this baby will be a tie breaker!

I’ve been feeling better and better.  No more morning (or night) sickness.  Yay!  The pain in the back of my legs is back, however, caused by varicose veins.  I’ve had this since baby #5 and each time it comes back but each time it clears up after the baby is delivered.  So, I’m hoping for the same outcome this time.  I really don’t like wearing support hose during the Summer, thankfully, I’ve been avoiding it for now.  Soon, however, I’m sure I will have to wear them again.

I suppose because this is my 7th pregnancy, I get bigger quicker with each one.  I did have to recently ditch my regular clothes and drag out some old pregnancy pieces.  I even went with my Mother-in-Law on a special shopping outing and picked out a few new maternity items so that I could be comfortable in this growing Summer heat.

pregnancy 14 weeks

I’m not craving much right now except for watermelon and pizza.  Weird combination.

We got some interesting news from our oldest son’s geneticist this week, which I’m not ready to share publically.  It has made for a difficult week for me, emotionally, and I’m so thankful for good friends who have showered me in prayer and scripture during this trying time.  I will definitely be sharing more about this in the coming weeks, once I’ve processed it and get a better grasped of it all.

I have not felt any movement yet.  I know I’m still early and I’m trying to remember when I felt it with my last couple.  I know with my third it was around 17 weeks – so I probably have a few weeks to go, still.  I was told a couple of weeks ago that because of the location of the placenta it would be harder to feel movement (anterior).  I’ve had that with a couple of pregnancies and I know it might take a little extra time because the baby will need to get that much bigger so that I can feel the movements.

I hope you are all enjoying your Summer and I plan to be back in a few weeks for my next update!

Record Keeping Help with My School Year {Review}

Recently, I’ve been using My School Year (Homeschool Record Keeping) from MyShoolYear.com to plan and track our school work.

MySchoolYear.com Review
What is My School Year?

MySchoolYear.com is an online home school teaching planner.  It is a way for you to plan out every ounce of your school work, extracurricular activities and even keep a running book list for each student.  This is an easy way to keep track of grades, standardized tests, attendance and other records.

my school year homeschool organization

How Does it Work?

When you first get started, you will be able to create a section for each of your kids.  Once that is created, there is a way to add subjects and then specific curriculum under those subjects.  After creating a slot for the curriculum you can decide whether to use Rapid Repeat or Quick Split for each book they reading, textbook they are using, or curriculum they are following for each subject.

my school year

Rapid Repeat is a very useful tool to use if the student does the same thing every day (like do one worksheet or read a chapter).  If there is a test or a quiz once a week you can easily plug that in using Rapid Repeat, as well.  There is a space for lesson planning which comes in handy if you need a little bit more detailed explanation to accompany the Rapid Repeat.

my school year

Quick Split is good if you or your students are reading a book and you want to have them read the same amount every day.  This is an easy way to split up the pages (just tell the software how many pages there are and how many days you are going to be using the curriculum – it will calculate and organize the rest for you!).

my school year

There is a section just for a book list and keeping track of how many books your children have read, who the author is, reading level and more details!

my school year

There is also the extra-curricular activities section.  This gives you the option to plan activities (including volunteer hours) into your child’s day and week.  It will track how often and how many hours they have put into this.

There is also a grading feature where you can put the grades in for each subject and the program will tell you the students average by the end of the term.

How Did We Use it?

I set up each of our students names which range from A who is in 8th grade, B who is in 6th, C, 4th and little D who is entering Kindergarten.  Under each child’s name I sorted through all the subjects that they are learning and put in the name of the curriculum.  The kids who use the same curriculum (like B and C who both do astronomy) I can easily make a copy of so that I don’t have to retype everything into the second students file.  I typed in the curriculum and how much we were doing (for instance, twice a week: Mondays and Wednesdays) and how long (30 minutes for this subject).  I planned this out for each of our students and then began a book list for them as well.

Our Thoughts?

I think this is a very helpful tool for a type A, organized type of home school mom.  We are a Charlotte Mason, low key, do the next thing type of homeschooler and I found myself getting overwhelmed by the level of organization this product provides.  Even though there is a way to reschedule lessons, I find that I don’t find myself using the computer to organize (I’m more of a pencil and paper type of girl).

I do, however, love that there is a book list generator and I find that I will most likely use this program for this purpose because I love seeing a running tally of all the books my children have enjoyed throughout the year.  I also might use it as a way to record keep – thus using it after the fact more than before.  However, this is PERFECT for a personality different than mine who needs to see everything planned out in order to move forward with their year.  I totally recommend this to them and I think they would have a lot of fun with My School Year!
