Laundry Skills by Age
I recently wrote about my laundry routine. A big part of that is that each child should learn to participate in doing the laundry. This is sorted out by skill level and by age. Each child in the house has a laundry chore to do each week. Depending on their age, they may be practicing a chore they've previously learned or focusing on gaining a new skill. In my house, the 4 year old helps put away his own clothes, takes his own sheets off on his assigned day to wash them, and picks up dirty clothes which might have not been put in the hamper. The other kids also each have a chore to do. They might bring their hamper to the laundry room, load the washer or start the washer. They also are able to help out more, if needed. Kids are taught valuable life skills by participating in laundry chores with the rest of the family. I started teaching them when my oldest was about 6 years old. In the last six years, they've learned how to do everything an adult can do including sort, start, transfer and fold the laundry.
