At the beginning of this school year we started something new. I signed up for an Audible subscription to use primarily with my 12 year old son who has dyslexia. My idea was pretty simple. He struggles with reading at grade level but he doesn’t have to struggle to have the experience of reading the classics.
Since he was small, I’ve been reading to him books that I thought he would enjoy. Once the diagnosis came, I decided to continue to read to him so that he didn’t miss out.
Then, last year, I watched a video of Andrew Pudewa from the Institute for Excellence in Writing. He spoke about the importance of reading aloud to your children.
It didn’t matter if the child is younger or older – reading aloud is so important. It’s essential so that the child learns great literature, develops a better vocabulary, and gains comprehension skills. It was my light-bulb moment.
While I LOVE reading to my kids, the problem is by middle school, I think a child needs to read more literature and there are only so many hours in the day that mama can do this (especially when I’m also reading aloud to the preschoolers and the kindergartener.)
That is when I did a quick read up of the Audible app. I decided to start homeschooling with Audible as my sidekick.

What is Audible?
Audible is a subscription service, owned by Amazon, that allows you to access a collection of thousands of audio books.
How Do You Purchase the Books?
Each month you will get 1 credit. Each credit is equal to one book purchase.
Once you purchase and download the book you get to keep it on your device.
You can actually purchase more than 1 book a month, if you need to, because you still buy extra books for the price listed on the Audible or Amazon website and save 30% off your purchase of additional books. You can roll over your credits each month up to a certain amount.
A Gold Membership is able to roll over up to 5 credits.
What I Love:
- The books are easy to find as they are in collections by genre.
- Once purchased they download into your Audible library.
- Many of the books are recorded readings from the author. Others are professional, full-cast recordings read by actors and other professionals.
- You can listen anywhere, anytime on your device or computer.
- You won’t lose track of where you are because the app saves the last spot you read.
- Every time you or your child listens to the book, the audible app records the amount of hours and minutes that you’ve read your book. You can track how much you’ve read each day and each month.
- We love this feature because we can see how often my son is “reading” his books. It also keeps him accountable, as he does a lot of this reading after our home school hours.

So, what did he download today?
Before we download new books, we discuss what he is interested in.
We also talk about what we are learning in homeschooling and how we are going to be homeschooling with Audible.
I decided on a few and my son decided on a few today. My 12 year old chose 4 books today:
